A rear-end on Mitchell Hammock Road at Alafaya Trail in the evening rush, a T-bone at Red Bug Lake Road and the State Road 417 ramps, a car pulling out at Lockwood Boulevard and Chapman Road, a multi-vehicle pileup on State Road 417 near the Oviedo Mall. If you were just in a crash in Oviedo, or nearby in Winter Springs, Chuluota, Geneva, Casselberry, Winter Park or the UCF area, and you are trying to figure out what to do next, this page is the short version, with the Oviedo-specific details, and links to the full guides.

Call Clyne is a lawyer referral service, not a law firm. Nothing here is legal advice. It is free, and so is talking to us.

It costs nothing to find out

If you are reading this and thinking you cannot afford a lawyer, read this part first. Personal injury lawyers do not charge you to talk, do not charge by the hour, and do not charge anything unless they recover money for you. The fee comes out of the recovery at the end, never out of your pocket. The first conversation is free. Call Clyne is free too: we ask you a few questions and connect you with a licensed Florida attorney who looks at your case at no cost. Nobody will ask you for money. First, the two things that matter most in Florida

See a doctor within 14 days. Florida is a no-fault state, and your own policy's Personal Injury Protection pays your first medical bills no matter who caused the crash, but only if you get treatment within 14 days. Oviedo has a full hospital inside the city. Oviedo Medical Center at 8300 Red Bug Lake Road, just west of State Road 417 near the Oviedo Mall, has a 24-hour emergency room, and AdventHealth runs a freestanding emergency room next door at 8100 Red Bug Lake Road. Neither is a state-designated trauma center. The most seriously injured crash victims are usually taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in downtown Orlando or AdventHealth Orlando, the two Level I trauma centers for the region, about 20 miles southwest by State Road 417 and State Road 408, or north to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital in Sanford, the Level II trauma center for Seminole County. Urgent care or your own doctor counts too. Read the 14-day rule guide.

Do not give the other driver's insurer a recorded statement. They will call fast and sound friendly. You are not required to talk to them. Read what to say when they call.

Getting your crash report in Oviedo

Inside city limits, the Oviedo Police Department responds to crashes, and its traffic unit investigates the serious ones. Its headquarters is at 300 Alexandria Boulevard, off Mitchell Hammock Road near City Hall, and the records unit there handles crash report requests during business hours. The city lines are tangled here: Winter Springs, Casselberry and Winter Park each have their own police department, and Chuluota, Geneva, Black Hammock and the pockets of unincorporated Seminole County between the subdivisions are covered by the Seminole County Sheriff's Office, so a crash on the far side of Red Bug Lake Road, County Road 419 or Lake Jesup may belong to a different agency. South of the county line toward UCF it is the Orange County Sheriff's Office. On State Road 417 it is usually the Florida Highway Patrol. Ask the officer at the scene which agency wrote the report and get the report number.

Florida crash reports are available online through the state's Florida Crash Portal, usually within about ten days, and from the responding agency's records unit. For the first 60 days the report is only available to the people involved, their insurers and their lawyers, so have your license and the report number ready.

Roads where Oviedo crashes happen

The stretches that come up most: Alafaya Trail, which is State Road 434, from the UCF area north past Mitchell Hammock Road, the Oviedo Mall and Red Bug Lake Road into downtown, where it becomes West Broadway Street and continues toward Winter Springs, a wide, fast road lined with plazas, apartments and driveways, Mitchell Hammock Road from Alafaya Trail east past Lockwood Boulevard to the State Road 417 ramps and County Road 419, the city's main east-west road, where a fatal crash closed the road at Sharon Court in 2023, Red Bug Lake Road from Winter Springs east past Tuskawilla Road and the 417 interchange to the hospital and Alafaya Trail, where a Winter Springs man was killed in a left-turn crash at the 417 exit ramp in January 2025, State Road 417, the Seminole Expressway, along the west side of the city with exits at Red Bug Lake Road and Mitchell Hammock Road, where chain-reaction crashes have shut the road, including a 17-vehicle crash near Red Bug Lake Road, Aloma Avenue, which is State Road 426, from Winter Park into Oviedo, Lockwood Boulevard, Chapman Road, Alafaya Woods Boulevard, where a fiery crash killed two people near Covington Street in 2025, and County Road 419 out toward Chuluota, where the Florida Highway Patrol has investigated multi-vehicle crashes near Sterling Creek. On Alafaya, Mitchell Hammock and Red Bug Lake the crashes are rear-ends at the lights, left turns across three lanes into a plaza, and lane changes around a car slowing to turn. On 417 they are high speed with several vehicles. Photos of the intersection, the signals and the lane markings matter, because these crashes often turn into arguments about who had the light or who changed lanes.

What to do in the first 48 hours

  • Call 911 and get a report, even for a "small" crash.
  • Photograph both cars, both licenses, both insurance cards, and the scene.
  • See a doctor within 14 days. Sooner is better.
  • Report the crash to your own insurer. Facts only.
  • Do not accept a quick check or sign anything from the other driver's insurer.
  • Keep every bill, receipt and visit summary.

Know the Florida clock

For most car accident injury claims in Florida you have two years from the date of the crash to file a lawsuit, and if you are found more than half at fault you recover nothing. Both changed in 2023. Details in How Long Do You Have to File in Florida.

When to talk to a lawyer

Not every fender bender needs one. Talk to a lawyer when you were injured and are still treating after a week or two, when the other driver was uninsured or fled, when fault is being disputed, or when you missed work. Florida personal injury lawyers work on contingency, which means no fee unless they recover money for you, and the first conversation is free.
